Secure ticketing in Africa: how ZERAKET stops fraud, duplication and reselling scams
A long-form guide to how event ticketing platforms handle payments and refunds securely, with rotating QR codes, identity-bound tickets and payout reconciliation built for African event organizers.
The African ticketing fraud problem, in plain language
For years, organizers across Kampala, Nairobi, Lagos, Kigali and Accra have been hit by the same three failures: QR codes duplicated and resold on WhatsApp, scalpers buying inventory with bots and reselling at the gate, and refund disputes that drag on because the payment trail does not match the ticket trail. The cost is real: lost gate revenue, queues that spill into the street, and brands that pull their sponsorship the next year.
ZERAKET was built to close those gaps without breaking the buying experience. The guide below explains exactly how, stage by stage, so an organizer or finance lead can audit a platform before trusting it with their event.
The six security pillars
Rotating QR codes
Every ticket QR is regenerated every 15 seconds with a signed payload. A screenshot, a forward, or a printed copy is dead by the time the next person tries it at the gate.
Identity-bound tickets
Optional ID binding ties a ticket to a verified holder. At the gate, the scanner confirms both the QR and the holder, eliminating bulk resale to anonymous buyers.
Offline-tolerant scanning
Scanners keep working when the stadium loses signal. Scans queue locally, then reconcile and flag duplicates the moment connectivity returns.
Payment reconciliation
Every Mobile Money and card transaction is matched to a ticket order in real time. Disputed payments freeze the ticket automatically and refund the right party.
Encrypted payloads
Ticket data is encrypted end to end. Even a scanner device leak does not expose the underlying ticket secret, the holder, or the payment trail.
AI fraud detection
Behavioural models score every checkout, every transfer, and every scan attempt, blocking bot orders and duplicate gate entries before they reach the queue.
How a payment becomes a ticket, securely
Stage 1, Buying
Secure checkout, locally relevant payment rails
Card, MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, and bank transfer all settle through PCI DSS Level 1 processors with 3-D Secure on every card and tokenized credentials. Refunds for cancelled or materially changed events are processed automatically to the original method.
Stage 2, Holding
Your ticket lives in your ZERAKET wallet
Wallet entries are bound to your account, encrypted at rest, and accessible offline. Transfers go through a verified, audited flow so the holder of record always matches the gate scan.
Stage 3, Transferring
Reselling without enabling scams
Where the organizer allows resale, ZERAKET runs the marketplace inside the wallet at face value plus a transparent fee cap. Off-platform trades are unsupported and the ticket is silently invalidated, with the buyer protected by an automatic refund.
Stage 4, Entering
Gate scanning that catches duplicates
Scanners verify the rotating QR, the identity binding (if enabled), and the duplicate-scan ledger. Burst-fail patterns trigger a real-time security alert to the organizer console.
Stage 5, Refunding
Refunds that are predictable, not optional
Cancellations and material changes auto-refund through the original payment method. Organizer-discretion refunds follow the rule set declared on the event page before checkout, so attendees see the policy before they pay.
Red flags when evaluating a ticketing platform
- Static QR codes that never rotate. A screenshot is a counterfeit ticket factory.
- No offline scanning, so the first network outage at the venue empties the gate.
- Refund policy written in vague language and not displayed before checkout.
- Payouts that cannot be reconciled line by line to tickets and Mobile Money receipts.
- No identity binding option for high-value tiers, VIP, or corporate events.
Frequently asked questions
How does ZERAKET prevent the same QR being used twice at the gate?
Each scan is logged to a per-event ledger; a second scan of the same payload, even from a different device, is rejected. Rotating QR codes mean the screenshot a scammer sent ahead of time is invalid by the time it reaches the gate.
What happens if my mobile-money payment fails halfway?
The order stays pending and the ticket is never minted until the payment processor confirms settlement. If the processor reverses or charges back, the ticket is frozen and the buyer is refunded automatically.
Can an organizer see my card or mobile-money number?
No. Organizers see the order, the amount, and a tokenized reference. Card and Mobile Money credentials never leave the PCI-scoped processors.
Do scanners still work without internet at the venue?
Yes. The scanner app validates the cryptographic QR offline and queues the scan locally. When connectivity returns, scans reconcile against the central ledger and any duplicates are surfaced in the organizer console immediately.
